Episode 28: When Dreams Die Slowly — The Emotional Cost of Abandoning Career Aspirations

Series: Broken by Burden: Financial Survival Strategies for the Troubled Mind

Date: 16 July 2025

Rachana stared at the blank wall of her small rented home. Once, those walls held her art — fiery acrylics, delicate watercolors, visions that came from her soul. Now, they held nothing.

After marriage, two kids, and an aging mother-in-law who needed care, Rachana put away her brushes.

“It’s just temporary,” she told herself.
But days became months. Months became years.
Now, even when she had time, she couldn’t find the will.

Because it wasn’t just the paints that dried.

It was the part of her spirit that had quietly surrendered.

Across the world, countless people have traded in dreams for duties:

  • 📦 Writers working as data entry clerks
  • 🎵 Singers who became salespeople
  • 🎓 Scholars who never applied for higher studies
  • 🌍 Activists who never left their hometown

Why?
Because life happened.
Rent. Marriage. Loans. Illness. Children. Insecurity.

And slowly, silently, their dreams didn’t die in flames —

They faded in silence.

1. It’s not just about passion. It’s about identity.

When you give up your dream, you often feel like you’re giving up yourself.

2. Unexpressed dreams turn into quiet resentment.

Not always toward others — but often toward your own choices.

3. Unlived aspirations affect mental well-being.

You may feel functional — but deeply unfulfilled.

4. It creates an internal story of “what could’ve been.”

This leads to nostalgia, regret, and a persistent ache — even in moments of success.

✅ 1. Mourn the dream — don’t mock it.

It’s okay to cry over the dreams that had to be delayed or sacrificed.
Give it a name. Acknowledge the pain.

✅ 2. Start small — but start again.

You don’t need a gallery to paint.
You don’t need a degree to write a blog.
You don’t need a stage to dance.

Reignite the dream on a smaller flame.
Sometimes a spark is all it takes.

✅ 3. Redefine your dream to fit your current life.

Maybe you can’t be a full-time filmmaker. But can you mentor one? Or make short videos on weekends? Or volunteer for a school play?

Dreams don’t die — they evolve.

✅ 4. Talk about your “unfinished chapters.”

Shame grows in silence.
The moment you say, “I used to love doing this…” you invite the world to witness your buried joy — and sometimes, offer you a way back.

✅ 5. Be your own validation.

Even if no one claps, no one pays, no one “likes” — do it because your soul remembers.

One night, during a power cut, Rachana lit candles. Her daughter handed her a blank page and some crayons.

“Can you draw me, Ma?”

She hesitated. Then smiled.

That night, Rachana didn’t just sketch her daughter —

She sketched herself back into existence.

Today, she shares her art online. Not for money. Not for fame.
But for the part of her soul that never stopped waiting.

Please remember:
Dreams don’t have expiry dates.
They only ask that you visit them — even briefly.

Your life may be crowded with responsibilities.
But your heart still deserves room to breathe.
